1. Introduction
In the light of a keen competition with iGADGET in the market, it seems our local market share is declining and less attractive to customers. As requested, this report presents possible reasons of them and provides feasible suggestions to improve the situation. The findings for this analysis are based upon market research carried out with customers in February 2011. A total of 400 consumers, which including 200 H&F MP3 users and 200 iGADGET MP3 users were interviewed and asked to complete a questionnaire on the design, functions, sound quality, battery life, headphone quality and overall satisfaction. A local market share from March 2010 to February 2011 are also obtained from our marketing department for analysis.
2. Findings
2.1 Overview
The overall satisfaction of H&F MP3 players is only slightly around a half while that of iGADGET is near two-thirds. It is found that design, functions and headphone quality aspects performs poorly. For the sound quality and battery life, over a half of respondents satisfied with these aspects.
2.2 Design
The most unsatisfied aspect that compared with the performance of iGARDGET is the design. Fewer than a half of users are satisfied with H&F MP3 while over four-fifths of them are satisfied with iGADGET. The reasons for this result are limited choices of colour in our product. We only offer Black and White these two colours while our competitor offer more than ten colours. Thus, this may unattractive for our customers to buy our products.
2.3 Functions
With regard to functions, only slightly above one-third of respondents show contentment on our MP3. However, nearly two-thirds of iGADGET users are contended with their functions. This might be due to the software requirement for transferring music files of H&F products. As a result, our customers may find it is not user friendly when they synchronize the files between MP3 players and computers.
2.4 Headphone Quality
In relation to headphone quality, both H&F and iGADGET perform badly. Three-fifths of respondents of iGADGET are not satisfied while over two-thirds of H&F customers indicate their dissatisfaction. This possibly because of the quality control problem and this may implies a reputation problem.
2.5 Market Share
Concerning the market share, H&F fluctuated in first half year in 2010 from 19% to 23 %. It started declining steadily from September 2010 and hit the bottom in February in 2011. For iGADGET, it also fluctuated in the first half year in 2010. Its market share dropped from September 2010 and reached the lowest point in November 2010 at 53%. However, it improved significantly to 63% in February 2011. The reasons for the loss of market share are probably due to the above problems in our products and the old-fashion spokeman, Felix Chan.
3. Conclusion
As a result of this detailed investigation, it has been found that main reasons of unsatisfactory of respondants are the poor design, user-unfriendly functions and poor quality of headphone. In addition, an out-dated spokeman has been used to promote our product for few years which bored teenagers and make our product unattractive to them.
It can be concluded that in order to increase our market share as well as to improve our products, immediate actions should be taken.
4. Recommendations
In the light of the points that I have highlighted, I would like to make the following recommendations:
4.1 Design
Given that the insufficient choice of colours of our MP3 players, it is recommended that we increase the choice of colours to our customers for at least 10 colours to enhance the attractiveness of our products.
4.2 Functions
In view if the fact that there are not user friendly music transfer procedures, it is proposed that the company should upgrade the players so as to simplify the steps in transferring music files. This may increase our attractiveness from the eyes of our users.
4.3 Headphone Quality
Since we have a problem with quality control problem, we could improve the quality control process, such as adopting the ISO 900 Standards and applying Total Quality Management.
4.4 Market Share
Regarding the continuously declining of market share, apart from the above suggestions, I suggest that we could change a new spokeman, who with a trendy, fresh and young image to our customers. One of the suitable candidates is Lady GaGa.
